Excerpt from ASDA's recent press release...
TRH The Prince of Wales today gave his support to ASDA as the retailer's Welsh stores sent over 650 hampers of local Welsh produce and essential supplies for the Welsh Guards and their families.
ASDA is the first retailer to support the Welsh Guards and their families with such a donation, which was the idea of ASDA stores across Wales.
Chris Brown, ASDA's Head of Ethical and Sustainable Sourcing, met with The Prince of Wales at Lille Barracks in Aldershot to present the donation to The Royal Highness. Chris Brown commented, "We asked our Welsh stores how they would like to celebrate St David's Day this year and there was overwhelming support for the modern day Welsh heroes of our communities. With the support of our local Welsh suppliers and Taylors Regional Foods, we have been able to put together 158 hampers of local Welsh produce, which the families will receive for St David's Day."
The Welsh Guards were so impressed with ASDA's support that they asked whether 500 batches of essential supplies could be provided for the 500 solider Battalion when they start their tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Chris added, "ASDA was delighted to be able to support the Welsh Guards as well as their families, as it is a fitting way to mark St David's Day. I'd like to thank our suppliers, without whom this support couldn't have happened."
Taylors Regional Foods in conjunction with Authentic World Foods, Princes Gate Water, Welsh Brew Tea, Bray's Confectionary, Tan y Castell Welsh Cakes, Parsons Pickles, Lowes Soft Drinks and Welsh Country Cakes brought together hampers of locally produced Welsh foods for the Welsh Guards' families to enjoy on St David's Day.
Taylors Regional Foods is one of ASDA's exclusive distribution hubs which distribute local produce to ASDA stores. The use of local hubs as one distribution point helps cut the number of 'food miles' products travel to reach ASDA stores and in the past year alone this has saved over three million food miles.
The Welsh Guards was raised on 26 February 1915 by order of King George V in order to complete the national complement of Regiments of Foot Guards identified with the countries of the United Kingdom.
The wide range of recent activities undertaken by the Welsh Guards reflects the busy and varied nature of the modern day British Army. A Guardsman who has served with the Battalion since 2002 will have been on operations in every calendar year. Tours to Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, interspersed with fire fighting, sport, adventurous training and State Ceremonial and Public Duties demonstrate the busy nature of this period.
As a Foot Guards Regiment in the Houshold Division, the Welsh Guards are proud to provide the Guard for Her Majesty the Queen at her Royal Residences. When carrying out these duties the Battalion is based in Central London. The Regiment is currently based in Lille Barracks, Aldershot and comes under 19 Light Brigade.
